Healthcare providers are responsible for ensuring that patient records are handled in accordance with the Patient Data Act and the regulations and general advice issued by the National Board of Health and Welfare regarding medical records and the processing of personal data, particularly in the healthcare sector (HSLF-FS). According to the Patient Data Act, patient records must be kept accessible for ten years after the last entry was made in the journal. The Patient Data Act complements the General Data Protection Regulation and must be applied by all healthcare providers, both publicly and privately operated.

The Patient Data Act imposes detailed requirements on healthcare providers regarding how patient records should be archived and made accessible. These requirements can be challenging for healthcare providers to meet. Archiving patient records in a structured and secure manner in-house is both time-consuming and costly.
